Gallas wins Wenger backing

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has hinted that William Gallas is a candidate for the captaincy of the Gunners, following the exit of Thierry Henry earlier this summer.

Wenger says that Gallas, fellow defender Kolo Toure and midfielder Gilberto Silva are the main contenders for the armband, despite the Frenchman having questioned the club's ambitions.

"William has all the ingredients to be captain, it is him or Gilberto or Kolo Toure," Wenger told Arsenal TV.

"He has got a lot of experience. At the back is the best position to captain the team, because you are in a position where you see all the problems on the pitch.

"That is a better position than for a centre-forward or a wide player."

Former Chelsea star Gallas had stated a couple of weeks ago: "Several players are questioning the club's future.

"Around us all the teams are recruiting, but what is planned to compensate for the departure of Thierry Henry? I am not at Arsenal to play for third place."
