Gallas set for new deal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is to discuss a new contract with William Gallas before the end of the year. The French defender's current deal expires next summer and he will be free to speak to other clubs in January. There were suggestions last season that Gallas' days at the club could be numbered after some outspoken comments about his team-mates led to him being stripped of the captaincy. However, he has started the new campaign in fine form and Wenger has hinted that he will look to extend the 32-year-old's stay at Emirates Stadium. "I will assess William's contract in December but the signs are good for him," Wenger said in the News of the World. Wenger has been pleased with the partnership Gallas has struck up with new centre-back Thomas Vermaelen. "Gallas and Vermaelen look comfortable together and are good for each other," he praised. "It is sometimes difficult to know who makes the other one good."
