Friendlies round-up - Arsenal ease past Graz

22 July 2010 08:12
Arsenal continued their pre-season preparations with a routine 3-0 victory over Sturm Graz in Austria. Samir Nasri - who scored in Saturday's 4-0 win at Barnet - grabbed two goals in the first half to put the Gunners in control.

And Arsene Wenger's side added a third after the interval through Henri Lansbury - one of seven players to come on at the start of the second half.

Grasshoppers 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool made a low-key start to life under Roy Hodgson, with new signing Joe Cole looking on from the sidelines as his team-mates drew 0-0 in tonight's friendly with Grasshoppers in Zurich.

A youthful Reds side created little in the way of clear scoring opportunities, with Alberto Aquilani's free-kick palmed away by Ivan Benito in their best effort while striker David Ngog wasted two good chances.

Sunderland 1-1 Brighton and Hove Albion

Fraizer Campbell denied Brighton with a late equaliser as Sunderland claimed a 1-1 draw in their pre-season friendly in the Algarve. Glenn Murray had been the central figure as Albion dominated the first half, seeing an 11th-minute header controversially disallowed, curling a good effort over and failing to convert Elliott Bennett's cross with the goal gaping before he finally broke the deadlock from the penalty spot after Boudewijn Zenden handled just before the break.

Young keeper Trevor Carson had to make a superb save from Murray after Matt Kilgallon's error and the Black Cats then had George McCartney stretchered off, but Campbell provided a silver lining when he stretched to turn in Jordan Henderson's excellent free-kick.

Huddersfield 1-0 Blackburn Rovers

Joey Gudjonsson scored a sensational winner as Huddersfield recorded a 1-0 victory over a youthful Blackburn side at the Galpharm Stadium. Gudjonsson fired the home side ahead in the 17th minute, re-adjusting his feet in mid air before thundering a stunning 25-yarder past Rovers goalkeeper Mark Bunn.

There were further chances at both ends in an entertaining clash, but Gudjonsson's strike proved to be the winner.

Tranmere Rovers 2-0 Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest were beaten 2-0 by Tranmere in their latest pre-season friendly at Prenton Park Rovers took the lead in the 45th minute when trialist Nick Wood headed home a corner from Paul McLaren.

Ian Thomas-Moore nodded in a cross from Marien Willemsen after the break to double the hosts` advantage and Forest were unable to respond.

Bray Wanderers 0-3 Middlesbrough

Kris Boyd was forced off with an injury as Middlesbrough rounded off their tour of Ireland with a 3-0 win at Bray Wanderers. Nicky Bailey opened the scoring for Boro in the 27th minute following good work from fellow summer signing Kevin Thomson.

But Gordon Strachan`s side suffered a blow soon after when Boyd was forced off injured, with Lee Miller coming on in his place. Substitute Leroy Lita hit the bar before adding the Teessiders' second in the 73rd minute and Miller headed a third with six minutes remaining.

Barnet 1-0 Watford

Barnet recorded a 1-0 victory over Championship side Watford in their latest pre-season friendly at Underhill. The Bees - who were defeated 4-0 by Arsenal at the weekend - produced an impressive performance and scored the only goal of the game in the 77th minute.

Ricky Holmes was the man on target as he beat Scott Loach with a low strike from the edge of the area.

Lowestoft Town 0-0 Colchester United

Colchester were held to a goalless draw by Lowestoft Town in their latest pre-season outing. Kayode Odejayi had the best chance of the first half but Andy Reynolds pulled off a fine reaction save to deny the striker. The Us pressed for a winner after the interval but were unable to break the deadlock.

Farnborough 0-1 Southampton

Anthony Pulis suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder as Southampton recorded a 1-0 victory over Farnborough. Pulis was withdrawn on the half hour at Cherrywood Road, with Ben Reeves coming on in his place.

Saints secured the win with nine minutes remaining, Lee Barnard firing home after Aarran Racine had seen his goalbound header blocked.
