England's Euro 2012 hopefuls: Who Fabio Capello can't ignore ahead of the qualifying campaign

With England's Euro 2012 qualification campaign looming, Fabio Capello has been around the grounds assessing the talent at his disposal.[LNB]The Italian came under fire for some of his selections during this summer's disastrous World Cup showing, and has promised to unleash of a clutch of new players. [LNB]Some of England's younger generation have already caught the eye with a bright start to the current campaign, while those with a point to prove have set about their business in the right way.[LNB]Here Sportsmail assesses who Capello will have in mind as he embarks on a new era, starting with tricky fixtures against Bulgaria and Switzerland.[LNB][LNB]Andy Carroll The 6ft 3in striker gained much attention pre-season following the club's decision to award him the famous No 9 shirt previously worn by Toon legends Alan Sheaer, Jackie Milburn and Malcolm Macdonald... but judging by his explosive start to the campaign he may have the international No 9 lined up too.[LNB] Get shirty: Newcastle's Andy Carroll is coping with the burden of history as he fulfills the No 9 role with distinction[LNB]Carroll failed to find the net in Newcastle's curtain-raiser at Old Trafford but soon struck, scoring a hat-trick against Aston Villa last weekend. The local lad's beautiful second goal was particularly Shearer-esque.[LNB]If he can keep scoring goals for Newcastle it will be hard for Capello to ignore the striker, who's all round game would be the perfect foil for Wayne Rooney following Emile Heskey's retirement. [LNB][LNB]Theo WalcottThe Arsenal man was the major casualty of the World Cup but he's come back fighting after admitting to being brought to tears by Capello's snub ahead of the trip to South Africa.[LNB]The Gunners tore into Blackpool last weekend, with Walcott central to all their good play. His pace was too much for the Seasiders as he struck a first club-career hat-trick and laid on plenty more chances in the 6-0 rout.[LNB]Walcott looked to have finally matured from the player that constantly ran into dead ends, and he showed an instinct not seen since he smashed three past Croatia for England in 2008. [LNB]Capello will have taken note.[LNB][LNB]Gary CahillBolton's powerhouse defender was on the verge of breaking into the England team when he suffered a blood-clot in his arm at the tail-end of last season. It took him off Capello's radar and denied the 24-year-old an international debut.[LNB]But back to full fitness and with Bolton yet to concede a goal from open play this season, the centre-back is carrying on from where he left off, showing the impressive form which has already earned him an inclusion in one previous Capello squad.[LNB]England's centre-back options are thin on the ground and Cahill deserves a chance to try and stake a claim to start alongside John Terry.[LNB] Flying high: Gary Cahill (right) will hope his injury woe is behind him as he eyes a recall to Capello's squad[LNB][LNB]Mikel ArtetaHe may be Spanish by birth but the Everton midfielder is now eligible for an England call-up having been a resident in the country for five years. He has even said he would seriously consider pulling on the famous Three Lions shirt.[LNB]His ability to take on defenders coupled with his superb passing accuracy was everything England were missing at the World Cup, and he could provide the creative spark that Capello needs.[LNB]The England boss was in the stands watching Arteta and Everton dominate Wolves at the weekend, and must now be considering the possibility of calling up the Spaniard. Stranger things have happened.[LNB] Eye on the ball: Mikel Arteta has said he would consider playing for England[LNB][LNB]And one who caught the eye for different reasons...[LNB]Joey BartonIt has been hard to ignore the midfielder who sported a ridiculous moustache during Newcastle's opening two fixtures of the season, which he vowed not to shave off until the Toon Army won a game.[LNB]To the relief of the nation Barton has now gone to work with the razor following his side's thumping 6-0 win over Aston Villa.[LNB]The attention won't have done him much harm, though, as he scored the first in an impressive display against Villa.[LNB][LNB]
