England Under 21's boss Stuart Pearce has seen his squad for their European Championship play-off against Romania hit by a trio of withdrawals.

Manchester City defender Micah Richards, Huddersfield goalkeeper Alex Smithies and Arsenal full-back Kieran Gibbs have all dropped out of the 23-man party and returned to their clubs due to injury.

Manchester City defender Kieran Trippier has been called up as Pearce elected to draft in just one replacement.

Trippier, 20, has yet to play a first-team match for City and is currently in his second loan spell at Barnsley. He has previously represented England Under 20s.

Friday's first leg will be played at Norwich's Carrow Road ground with the second leg taking place in Botosani next Tuesday as Pearce's men chase a place at next summer's finals in Denmark.
