Danny Welbeck: An Arsenal misfit or a case of Resurgence?

Danny Welbeck was sold my Manchester United, his childhood club, to try and re-create his career at the Emirates Stadium at Arsenal. Now the reported fee of about 20 million euros might be deemed as overpriced many, but I think Arsenal needed a striker desperately.

Sanogo has left his shooting, passing and almost every kind of boots somewhere. And for some reason, Joel Campbell does not feature much. Without Giroud, Arsenal has lost their archetypal centre forward, who used to excel at hold up play and passes around the box. His aerial ability is also better than anyone else in the team. Hence, Alexis Sanchez, a different type of forward altogether could alone have not compensated for Giroud’s absence.

In comes Danny Welbeck, who is tactically of the same mould as Giroud. But he is younger, probably more fluid and has had lesser game time at United. But though his form has been poor, he may be a good cover because he does have some good skills that could give him more game time. Who knows, linking up with proper midfielders like Cazorla and Ozil might be advantageous for him. He could also strike up a good partnership with Sanchez and form a bifocal attack.

If Welbeck can do what Sturridge did at Liverpool, we could see a partnership similar to the SAS that destroyed Premiere League defences. Welbeck has strength and pace in decent proportion, and he had the ability to finish once. If Wenger can bring back his confidence and play him regularly, just like Rodgers did for Sturridge, Danny Welbeck could emerge as a good striker and help the Arsenal attack with their goal scoring burden.
