Could Olivier Giroud take the Premier League by storm for Arsenal this season?
Arsenal’s French striker Olivier Giroud had something that fell some way short of a break-out season last term. While he posted decent return by every standard for a debut season, he was not spectacular nor was his goal-scoring prowess by any means close to a matching Robin Van Persie’s influence on the team which a lot of fans had idealistically hoped he would.
Admittedly 17 goals in all competitions for the Gunners is no mean feat for a debut season especially from a player who just made the transition from French side Montpellier to a much more physical league - and the fact that he did not experience the famed culture shock that typically thwarts the kickoff of the careers of an average player who has just landed on English shores, should mean something. More so as he was thrust into a hitherto unfamiliar role of competing for his place in the side his stout performance leading the line for the Gunners was heartwarming.
More important though is his contribution to the team. He offers a veritable aerial threat to opponents which the disappointing Nicklas Bendtner never actually delivered upon and he holds up play admirably bringing his teammates into the game. The 11 assists he chalked up last season is proof of his importance to Arsenal’s attacking options.
If his recent form is anything to go by, his 5 goals in two outings in Arsenal’s pre-season tour show evidence of a striker exuding confidence and a much needed improvement in the chemistry between himself and his teammates. And with perennial penny-pincher Mr. Wenger scrimping on transfer funds as usual, an Arsenal bracing up for life without Higuan, Suarez or Rooney could sure do with a Giroud who can shoot straight and deliver on his promising debut season for the club.
