Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been rocked by the news that Gael Clichy could be sidelined for up to four months after being told he needs surgery on a fractured foot.
The 20-year-old sustained the injury on Tuesday when he was playing for France's Under-21 side against England.
"The story is that Gael will need surgery," Wenger told the club's official website.
"Ashley (Cole) is five weeks away and Gael is three to four months away.
"The quite remarkable thing, in a negative way, is that he has the same problem as Ashley Cole.
"It is terrible for the boy, we feel really bad for him. For us it is hard to take as well because we have no left-backs who are really comfortable in that position."
Justin Hoyte is on a season-long loan at Sunderland so Wenger could move Pascal Cygan or Kolo Toure to left-back.
