Chelsea have lost control: Slump deepens for Ancelotti's men after Arsenal defeat

29 December 2010 08:12
Carlo Ancelotti has been told that his job is not under immediate threat despite Chelsea's alarming slump and dressing room claims that the team are locked in a downward spiral. [LNB]The Barclays Premier League champions start the day in fifth and will drop to sixth if they lose at home to Bolton on Wednesday night. [LNB] Blue Monday: Theo Walcott slips past Petr Cech as Ashley Cole looks on[LNB]They were well beaten by title rivals Arsenal on Monday and goalkeeper Petr Cech admitted that everything seemed to be going wrong following the club's 3-1 defeat at the Emirates. [LNB]'We are not used to seeing Chelsea play the way we are,' said Cech. 'We're not doing the right things on the pitch. We're making mistakes and getting punished for them. The second and third goals were really unlike Chelsea. [LNB]'I don't remember us ever conceding two goals in one minute like that. We've stopped doing the things we were doing at the start of the season when we didn't concede goals and we were scoring a lot. [LNB]'We can't find the same rhythm and we are making wrong choices and making lots of wrong passes. [LNB]'Every time we attack we are offside and we are making mistakes in the defensive third. This is exactly the reason we are not winning games. We find ourselves in a circle. We make a mistake, we get punished and we don't score goals. If we keep going like this, we will have a big disappointment in terms of chasing the title.' [LNB] Enlarge Owner Roman Abramovich, who was in the Caribbean on Tuesday, is not expected at tonight's game. Sources at the club claim there is concern but no panic in the boardroom, even though Ancelotti's squad have taken only six points from eight games and are fast losing touch with the leaders. [LNB]Nicolas Anelka hopes to return after a knee injury against Bolton but Daniel Sturridge and John Mikel Obi are doubtful. [LNB]'The gap has started to open,' added Cech. 'Nobody is happy with the situation. Results have been bad. At the moment, we can't find the right chemistry on the pitch. But we are not throwing the towel in yet because we know everything can change fast.'[LNB]Abramovich fired Luiz Felipe Scolari in February 2009 when he feared Chelsea were slipping out of contention for a Champions League place. [LNB]        HAVE YOUR SAY...     What's gone wrong at Chelsea... and who's to blame? Chelsea have gone from favourites for the title to struggling to hold their head above water in the top four in the space of just a few weeks. There are a number of potential reasons for their dismal run - Ray Wilkins' sacking, key injuries, old legs - but give us your verdict on the Bridge Blues... TELL US WHAT YOU THINK A club statement at the time said: 'Results and performances of the team appeared to be deteriorating at a key time in the season. In order to maintain a challenge for the trophies we are still competing for, we felt the only option was to make a change.'[LNB]Although Guus Hiddink took over for three months, Ancelotti was Abramovich's chosen successor and delivered the Premier League and FA Cup Double in his first season.[LNB]That has bought him time but does not make him bullet-proof, especially as the happy spirit generated within the dressing room last season has quickly cooled since the sacking of his assistant Ray Wilkins last month. [LNB]Ancelotti has no intention of walking out on £6million-a-year contract which expires in 2012 and his greatest short-term protection is Chelsea's drive to cut costs and Abramovich's reluctance to pay another big compensation settlement. [LNB]There is also no obvious quick-fix replacement, with Hiddink no longer with Russia, where his salary was effectively funded by Abramovich. He is now with Turkey and not keen to assist Chelsea, other than in a consultancy role.[LNB]Meanwhile, Kaka is '90 per cent' certain to join Chelsea if he cannot revive his Real Madrid career, according to a key man in the deal which took the Brazilian to Spain. [LNB]Italian super-agent Ernesto Bronzetti, who has fostered a 10-year friendship with Madrid president Florentino Perez, believes that Kaka will prove his worth to Madrid when he returns from a knee injury next month. [LNB]Inter Milan are also interested in signing the former AC Milan star, but Bronzetti said: 'If he were to leave in June, he has a 90 per cent chance of going to Chelsea and not Inter.'[LNB] Chelsea '90% certain' to land Kaka as Brazilian eyes Ancelotti reunionWake up!
