29 October 2009 02:42
CARLING CUP FOURTH ROUND Arsenal 2 Liverpool 1 (FT)Chelsea 4 Bolton 0 (FT)Man City 5 Scunthorpe 1 (FT)   That's it then for the Carling Cup fourth round and we have been treated to some fine clashes. [LNB]Plenty of goals but no upsets mean there's a very strong line-up for the quarter final draw on Saturday - Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Blackburn and Manchester City and Portsmouth will fight for a place in the semi finals. [LNB]You'll get all the pictures and reaction first here with Sportsmail, goodnight. [LNB]21.40: FULL TIME! The fulltime whistles have blown in all tonight's matches. [LNB]21.35: Huge penalty shout for Liverpool. Aquilani's audacious overhead kick is almost caught Senderos. To be fair to the Swiss defender, he was only about three inches away from the Italian. [LNB]21.34: The fourth official has indicated an extra four minutes - cue barrage on Arsenal's goal![LNB]21.32: GOAL! Drogba gets in on the act and nicks a goal right at the death to end a miserable night for the Wanderers. [LNB]21.30: SUBS. Merida come off to a well deserved ovation to be replaced by Francis Coquelin and Deggen comes off for Nathan Ecclestone. [LNB]21.26: GOAL! Michael Johnson makes it five for City with a left foot drive from 25-yards. [LNB] Heads we win: Johnson laps up the praise as City rout Scunny[LNB]21.23: Babel should have equalised! Kuyt pinged the ball across the goal but the striker failed to connect two-yards out. And then, at the other end, Eduardo flashes one past the post. [LNB]21.19: SUBS. Arsenal swap debut-boy Eastmond and Bendtner for Mark Randall and Sanchez Watt - Liverpool swap Ngog and Plessis for Benayoun and AQUILANI! A huge cheer from the 5,000 traveling  fans greets the Italian on his debut. [LNB]21.17: GOAL! Tevez puts the game out of sight for City. Teh Argentine slid in at the near post and hit it into the roof of the net.[LNB]21.13: Over 60,000 at the Emirates tonight - good effort that, what with the north London derby coming up on Saturday. [LNB]21.12: GOAL! Deco seals the match for Chelsea as the home side swept upfield on the counter-attack.[LNB] Blue day: Deco celebrates Chelsea's third goal of the evening with Ballack[LNB]21.10: Right on cue! Babel hammers a shot from Kuyt's rolled free-kick and Fabianski has to get down smartly to his left to save. [LNB]21.09: It has taken over an hour but there has been a brief lull for the last couple of minutes at the Emirates. [LNB]21.02: GOAL! Joleon Lescott fine header extends City's lead over Scunthorpe. [LNB]20.59: Voronin almost finds redemption as his shot slides just past the post. A neat leave from the Ukrainian and then a sharp one-two with Spearing almost led to the visitors equaliser.[LNB]20.58: Ngog does well to get past Senderos but then makes the mistake of passing to the hapless Voronin who lets the ball roll by his feet. [LNB]20.54: GOAL! Nicklas Bendtner re-establishes the Gunners' lead after firing into the roof of the net from five-yards. The Dane holds off Skrtel and slams it past Cavalieri.[LNB]20.53: Babel sneaks in behind three Arsenal defenders and the ball breaks to Jay Spearing but his shot started wide and ended ... wide. [LNB]20.50: Interestingly the players come out at the Emirates to 'Another one Bites the Dust' by Queen - I didn't know that was a big Arsenal anthem.[LNB]20.34: HALF TIME. Phew - what a half that's been. Frenetic stuff from both sides and two excellent goals from two unlikely sources. More of the same next half, please. Elsewhere - Chelsea are cruising past Bolton and City have got their noses back in front against the Iron. [LNB] Cruzing: The City striker celebrates his first goal for the club[LNB]20.32: An incredible scramble in the box saw Cavalieri chasing after the ball in a crowd of players. All it needed was the Benny Hill music to complete the picture.[LNB]20.30: More fine interplay between the Arsenal youngsters - Nasri found debutant Eastmond on the right and it took a great sliding challenge from Deggen to snuff out the danger. This is a fine game, by the way. Real pace and quality on show from both sides.[LNB]20.27: GOAL! Santa Cruz's headed goal puts City back in front against Scunny. [LNB]20.23: A fine, fine move from Arsenal should have ended with a goal. Ramsey finds Merida in acres on the left of the Liverpool box but Cavalieri flew out like a man possessed and the Spaniard could only chip over him in the direction of the goal. [LNB] Hold the Forte: Scunny slide back into the match with City[LNB][LNB]20.16: GOAL! Scunthorpe equalise at Eastlands! Forte steals in behind Lescott to prod home from five-yards. More suspect defending from City. [LNB]20.15: GOAL! Malouda doubles Chelsea's lead with a scrappy effort that bounced off a couple players and was poked home from six-yards.[LNB]20.13: GOAL! Insua smashes a shot home from 25-yards. It went straight over Fabianski's head but still, it looked unstoppable. Better than Merida's effort, if that's possible? Can I call it a beauty? You betcha![LNB] Dream goal: Merida celebrates a cracking first strike for the Gunners[LNB]20.07: GOAL! What a strike from Merida! Voronin's horrible lay-off was intercepted by Gilbert, the ball broke to the 19-year-old Spaniard and he hammered a left-foot shot  in from 20-yards. It just squeezed in off the post.[LNB]20.05: Aaargh - Arsenal try to walk the ball into the net - as Nasri and Bendtner combined on the edge of the box but the Danish striker got the ball stuck under his feet and Cavalieri gobbled the ball up.[LNB]20.00: GOAL! Salomon Kalou gives Chelsea the lead over Bolton at Stamford Bridge - fine header from 10-yards out.[LNB] Early breakthrough: Ireland celebrates his goal against Scunthorpe[LNB]7.58: Samir Nasri goes just wide of the post from a free kick right on the edge of the box - that would have made it a wonderful return for the France international.[LNB]7.52: A fantastic start at the Emirates and Liverpool have had to fine chances to take the lead. David Ngog involved in both as Kuyt and Plessis both missed the target from great positions. [LNB]7.48: GOAL! Stephen Ireland gives City an early lead at Eastlands - right foot curler from outside the box, low to the keeper's left.[LNB]7.45: We're underway in all the matches - Nasri and Eduardo get the ball rolling as it were at the Emirates.[LNB] Battle at the Bridge: Kalou and Gardner tussle for the ball[LNB]7.44: Just time to squeeze the teams at Eastlands in ... Man City: Given, Zabaleta, Kompany, Lescott, Sylvinho, Wright-Phillips, De Jong, Barry, Ireland, Tevez, Santa Cruz. Subs: Taylor, Richards, Bridge, Johnson, Mwaruwari, Bellamy,Weiss.Scunthorpe: Murphy, Byrne, Jones, Mirfin, Williams, Josh Wright, McCann, O'Connor, Woolford, Forte, Hayes. Subs: Lillis, Andrew Wright, Togwell, Sparrow, Hooper, Spence, Canavan.[LNB]7.35: Just a couple of minutes until the matches kick off so I suppose this is as good an opportunity as any to give you my email address - tom.bellwood@ dailymail.co.uk - send anything you want, no really, please do - anything.[LNB]7.29: At the Emirates .. Samir Nasri makes his first start of the season and Alberto Aquilani makes an appearance on the bench. Could tonight be his night to actually kick a ball for the Reds? Eduardo and Nicklas Bendtner start for the hosts and Aaron Ramsey features in midfield.[LNB]7.28: So, Carlo Ancelotti has left Michael Essien, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba on the bench and rested John Terry, Nicolas Anelka, Ricardo Carvalho and Petr Cech. Daniel Sturridge gets a start alongside Salomon Kalou up front with Joe Cole to play in behind the front two. Defender Alex begins his first senior game since the FA Cup final after recovering from groin surgery. There is no Kevin Davies for Bolton, meaning Ivan Klasnic, who scored against Everton at the weekend, is the lone striker. Ali Al Habsi is the goalkeeper with Jaaskelainen on the bench.[LNB]7.26: Here's how the sides line up at the Emirates ... Arsenal: Fabianski, Gilbert, Senderos, Silvestre, Gibbs, Eastmond, Bendtner, Nasri, Ramsey, Merida, Eduardo. Subs: Jaaskelainen, Robinson, Elmander, Cohen, Lee, Basham, Andrew O'Brien.[LNB]7.20: I'll have the Arsenal and Liverpool teams for you in just a second but I can tell you that Arsene Wenger makes 11 changes to the side that drew with West Ham and just Dirk Kuyt retains his place in the  Liverpool line up. [LNB]7.15pm: Good evening and welcome to Sportsmail's coverage of the three remaining fourth round Carling Cup clashes. [LNB] What, me? Yes Gary, you - the person who just fouled the Barnsley player horribly in the match at Oakwell last night[LNB]After last night's glut of goals, Neville's sending off and Sir Alex Ferguson's shock agreement with a refereeing decision, there's plenty for tonight's ties to live up to. [LNB]We'll be focussing on the action at the Emirates this evening as the pick of the ties sees Arsenal take on Liverpool. [LNB]Neither Rafa Benitez or Arsene Wenger have lifted this trophy during their time in England and both managers are expected to make numerous changes for the showdown. [LNB]Wenger will, as expected, give the kids a run out and Benitez is likely to make anywhere up to 10 changes to the side that turned over Manchester United on Sunday.[LNB]Elsewhere, Chelsea host Bolton Wanderers hoping to build on their impressive 5-0 defeat of Blackburn Rovers at the weekend, while the visitors will be looking to cause an upset, buoyed after their 3-2 win over Everton.[LNB]Joe Cole is likely to start after his fine showing in the win over Rovers.[LNB]And at Eastlands, Manchester City will be trying to avoid a major upset when they take on Championship side Scunthorpe United.[LNB]Will this be City's year to win a trophy? Their last cup success was in this competition way back in 1976. [LNB]So, to re-cap - the focus tonight will be at the Emirates but I'll keep you up-to-date with the action from all tonight's ties.
