AZ v Arsenal preview

20 October 2009 10:16
Arsenal will be without Theo Walcott for Tuesday's game against AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Champions League. The attacker suffered medial knee ligament damage against Birmingham at the weekend and is likely to face a month on the sidelines following the tackle from Liam Ridgewell. Arsenal will be looking to make it three wins from three in Group H, but AZ have only picked up one point so far after a defeat by Olympiakos and a draw against Standard Liege. The Gunners will also be without Czech midfielder Tomas Rosicky (knee), but full-back Gael Clichy has shaken off an ankle problem which kept him out of the Premier League win at the weekend. Samir Nasri, who broke his leg during pre-season, and goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski (knee) will continue their rehabilitation with the reserves on Tuesday night, but strikers Nicklas Bendtner and Eduardo (both groin), midfielder Denilson (back) and centre-half Johan Djourou (knee) remain sidelined. Arsene Wenger may opt to keep faith with goalkeeper Vito Mannone, who played in the 3-1 victory over the Blues on Saturday, although first-choice shot-stopper Manuel Almunia is fit and could return between the sticks. Ronald Koeman's AZ side were beaten 3-2 by Steve McClaren's FC Twente on Saturday, and currently lie in sixth place in the Eredivisie. The Dutch champions have lost five of their last eight matches in all competitions, winning only two, and face a difficult task if they are going to overcome an in-form Arsenal side. Koeman's task is made all the more difficult with the absence of Pontus Wernbloom (knee), Sergio Romero (back) and Moussa Dembele (hamstring), who will all miss the clash at the DSB Stadion. Arsenal's last visit to the Netherlands in the Champions League ended in a 1-0 defeat by PSV Eindhoven, then managed by Koeman, and he will be hoping for a repeat result this time out.
