Ashley Cole shows the benefits of flying high

High up: Ashley Cole brought his electric form at Chelsea to the England shirt[LNB]FLYING HIGHAshley Cole showed the damage he can cause in attacking areas when he laid on Jermain Defoe's first goal. [LNB]He's made an electric start to the season with Chelsea and brought that form with him here. He linked well with James Milner. [LNB]One criticism is that his attacking bursts often left space behind. A better team will take more advantage.[LNB]JOE COOL The best England 'keeper I played with was David Seaman, who deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Peter Shilton and Gordon Banks. [LNB]Ever since, England have been fishing for someone of that stature and they might have found a really good one in Joe Hart. [LNB]I like his attitude and his confidence. England will need those qualities in Switzerland.[LNB]KEEP IT UP, THEO First half, blistering. Second half, not so good from Theo Walcott. But let's boost him up, not beat him up. [LNB][LNB]You could hear in the first half how the Wembley crowd came to life every time he got the ball. I sense there is more confidence about his game this season and, with four goals already for Arsenal, he is looking sharp. Let's get behind him.[LNB]HARD GRAFT Jermain Defoe has always been a brilliant finisher, ever since he was a boy at Charlton. [LNB]But you don't always associate him with hard work; he's a fox in the box, who waits for his chances. Last night, however, he picked the pockets of the Bulgarian midfielders to steal the ball often in the first half and set the tempo by defending from the front. Good to see.[LNB] Credit: Jermain Defoe worked hard for his goals, just reward for his decision to delay an operation to play [LNB]Four musketeers: Adam Johnson was one of four Manchester City players on the pitch[LNB]GOOD CALL...Defoe was going to have an operation on his groin this week to take advantage of the international break, but he wanted to go and play for England. [LNB]He got his reward with a brilliant hat-trick. It looks like a good call, but Spurs will be hoping it stands up to a demanding season. [LNB]When he is on top of his game there isn't a better finisher in the country.[LNB]CITY 4 UNITED 1 Say what you like about Manchester City's spending, but there were four of their players on the pitch in England colours at the end of the game; Joe Hart, Gareth Barry, Adam Johnson and James Milner - and only one Manchester United player, Wayne Rooney. [LNB]Some change from those famous days of Beckham, Neville, Scholes and Butt.[LNB]SORRY FOR MICHAEL I spoke to my dad, Harry last night, after the sad injury to Michael Dawson. [LNB]Dad is devastated for the lad, because he absolutely loves him and he has been terrific for Tottenham. Michael's a top professional, who gives everything in every game and he didn't deserve that. [LNB]It was so innocuous as well and just shows what can happen. I know what it feels like to come off on a stretcher when playing for England. It's a horrible feeling. At last a team that looks like England ... so what has changed?England 4 Bulgaria 0: How the players, and the manager, ratedJamie Redknapp's England watch: Ashley Cole shows the benefits of flying highEngland 4 Bulgaria 0: Jermain Defoe hat-trick helps Fabio Capello along the road to recovery[LNB]
