Andrey Arshavin is losing his battle to be fit in time for Arsenal's match against Wigan on Saturday. The Russia star, struggling with groin and knee injuries, expects to return to training by the end of the week, but is unlikely to be ready for the Barclays Premier League clash at the Emirates. Arshavin will not travel with his side for the Champions League Group H opener at Standard Liege on Wednesday. 'Recovery from my groin injury is on target,' said the £15million February signing from Zenit St Petersburg. 'Everything is normal with the knee, too, so by the end of the week the plan is to attend training.' The 28-year-old aggravated a groin injury during the defeat by Manchester United on August 29, which left him needing three weeks to recover, but he turned out for Russia in Wales last week, leaving boss Arsene Wenger to say: 'He should not have played. You can say a lot, but it doesn't do a lot.' However, Arshavin has reiterated his insistence that there is no rift. 'The club and I are in a situation of full understanding,' he told Russian newspaper Sport Express. 'I won't be hurried and so-called problems in terms of my injury and playing for the national team have been invented.'
