Arsene Vesuvius! ‘Job is like living on a volcano’, says Arsenal manager

Emotional: Wenger had a few choice words for his players after an abject first half at Anfield[LNB]According to Arsene Wenger's graphic metaphor, the pressures of football management are such that 'we live on a volcano'.[LNB]Mount Wenger erupts with about the same infrequency as Vesuvius, sayhis players, but when he blows it can be similarly spectacular andproduce its own kind of startling results.[LNB]Yesterday the lava flow had stemmed enough for the Arsenal managerto make a more measured assessment of Sunday's events at Liverpool, which included the colourful description of the place where hisprofession sits.[LNB]On Wednesday the Frenchman takes his team to Burnley, where he truststhere will be no need for the kind of half-time explosion that hedeemed necessary at Anfield.[LNB]Wenger reckons that the last time he so seriously let rip was whenhis side trailed Manchester United 5-1 after 45 minutes at Old Traffordin 2001. The reason it happens so rarely in his case is that hebelieves the loss of temper carries considerable risks.[LNB]'The problem with anger is that you can create some damage that youcannot repair,' he said. 'Even if there is no damage, then other peoplemake you feel you have caused damage. [LNB] Galvanised: Arsenal turned the match against Liverpool on its head after Wenger's half-time team talk[LNB]'For example, the Phil Brown incident last season with Hull[Arsenal's opponents on Saturday]: did that create their blip after?Nobody knows, but people accused him of that.[LNB]'The problem in our job is that it's hard to measure the real impactof your attitude or behaviour. You behave with your instinct and yourrational or irrational approach. [LNB]'Sometimes the emotional side takes over but you cannot live onlywith the emotional side. You have to be rational most of the time.[LNB]'I do not question the attitude of my players because they want towin. You are in a position where you have to try to help them win. Thedifficulty for us sometimes is how do you think you can help them?'[LNB]Wenger refused to go into detail about the language he used onSunday, and while he acknowledged that 'You're not fit to wear theshirt' is about the ultimate slur in football, he would not confirm heused the phrase. [LNB] Open race: The 'Invincibles' achievement is unlikely to be repeated[LNB]In fact, he seemed rather amused by the interest stirred up by hissupposed rant. It might be because he is aware, underneath, thatArsenal's second-half revival had as much to do with Liverpool'scurrent flakiness as it did with anything else.[LNB]That belief, and the wider events of the weekend, reinforce hisfeeling that Liverpool will be 'up there' by the end of the seasonamong seven teams the Big Four plus Tottenham, Manchester City andAston Villa who technically still have a chance of winning thePremier League this season.[LNB]'It is the most open in the 13 years that I have been here, but I amwaiting for Christmas and for the transfer window, because some clubscan still add players.'[LNB]Sunday's second-half revival will count for little if his teamtravel to Turf Moor and buckle like they did in the first 45 minutes atAnfield.[LNB]'Beating Liverpool was a relief for the team, because we needed tobeat one of the big teams, but if you want to win the league you mustgo and win matches like this,' said Wenger.[LNB] VIDEO: Wenger reveals why he was right to rant at his Arsenal starsALL THE MIDWEEK BARCLAYS PREMIER LEAGUE TEAM NEWSBurnley v ARSENAL: Denilson and Armand Traore ruled out of trip to Turf MoorALL THE ARSENAL FC
