German side Hamburg have activated a buying clause in on-loan Arsenal defender Johan Djourou's contract, the struggling Bundesliga side's manager Mirko Slomka reported on Wednesday.

"I am happy that he's staying with us for the next few years as he's a stabilising influence at the centre of our defence," said Slomka whose team is in 17th and fighting to avoid the first relegation in the club's history.

Hamburg took the Swiss international on a season-long loan from Arsene Wenger's Premier League side in July 2013.

Local media reports suggest Djourou has signed a deal keeping him in Hamburg until 2016 for between 2.5 and 3.5 million euros.

The 27-year-old Ivory Coast-born defender has started in 20 league games this season.
