Arsenal's Johan Djourou out for six months

According to the Swiss Football Federation, Djourou has had an operation on his knee cartilage. Djourou had been expected to push for a first-team place this season and it means manager Arsene Wenger must rely upon Mikael Silverstre and Philippe Senderos as his main defensive cover. During an encouraging start to the season Arsenal's first-choice centre-back pairing has been William Gallas and Thomas Vermaelen, with Wenger also confident in Alex Song’s abilities as cover in defence. Song has been playing as a holding midfielder so far this season but, in the longer term, Wenger believes that he will develop into a centre-back. Samir Nasri is also currently out with a broken leg, Lukasz Fabianski is recovering from knee surgery and Theo Walcott has an inflammation in his back. Wenger, though, is hopeful that both Cesc Fabregas and Tomas Rosicky will be fit to face Manchester City on Saturday.
