Arsenal's Johan Djourou knocked for six: Swiss claim star is out until March

Arsenal are confident Johan Djourou will return in less than six months after undergoing knee surgery on Friday. Djourou's hopes of finally breaking into the first-team appear to have been scuppered for now as the defender is set for a spell on the sidelines until March, according to the Swiss FA. The news is a blow to Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, who was hoping the player - on Arsenal's books since he was 16 - could fill the void left by Kolo Toure's £14million move to Manchester City. But the Gunners are optimistic and believe the 22-year-old could return to action much sooner. The centre-back was injured on international duty for Switzerland last month and Wenger had hoped he would return to action within weeks to push for a starting spot at the Emirates stadium. But if the Swiss FA's assessment is correct Wenger will now be forced to turn to the less fancied Mikael Silvestre and Philippe Senderos to back up first-choice defenders Thomas Vermaelen and William Gallas. Senderos, who spent last season on loan at AC Milan, has seen his chances of first-team football take a dramatic turn since the summer, where he was frozen out by manager Arsene Wenger and expected to leave during the transfer window.
