Arsenal ride their luck and the crest of a wave to beat Norwich City 3-1

For the second year in a row, Arsenal have overcome a poor start to put themselves in pole position for a place in the Champions League, with Saturday’s victory over Norwich taking them above rivals Chelsea and Tottenham into third place. But Wenger also knows that they would not be there but for the breaks they enjoyed against Norwich City, who were justifiably aggrieved at a raft of decisions that transformed this game in the final minutes. Trailing to Michael Turner’s 57th-minute goal, Arsenal got back into the game via an 84th minute penalty that divided opinion sharply, and completed a 3-1 victory with a goal that should have been disallowed for offside. The penalty award was controversial enough, with referee Mike Jones only punishing Kei Kamara’s tug on Olivier Giroud’s shirt after his assistant Richard West spotted the offence from the far touchline. It was West who had erroneously flagged for the corner from which the offence occurred, and the same official then failed to see that Theo Walcott was in an offside position when he set up fellow substitute Lukas Podolski to make it 3-1 in stoppage time.
