Arsenal must break bank to land Wayne Rooney
Arsenal and Arsene Wenger are still keeping everyone guessing over their will they won’t they style of doing transfer business. Most Arsenal fans recognise that Arsene never does his business publicly and his cards are always played very close to his chest.
When Arsenal lost RvP to Manchester United it was a massive blow to both the club and their fans. The Dutchman’s class was there for everyone to see, as he proved the decisive difference to help clinch the Red Devil’s record 20th league title. The events at Old Trafford in the last few days will have shocked non-Manchester Utd fans, but in truth most Utd fans see Rooney as excess baggage now and they will not be surprised by these developments. RvP is their new hero and Rooney is now simply seen as good back-up in case Robin gets injured.
This is a position that will infuriate Rooney and there is more than an air of inevitability that Rooney’s days at Old Trafford are numbered. The saying “what goes around comes around” has finally come around for Rooney, as Moyes has had the last laugh after the then 19-year old deserted Everton for Manchester Utd back in 2004.
So, the big question now is who will acquire Rooney’s services? Chelsea are very keen and have launched an official bid which has been turned down. However, I feel that Moyes will rather sell to Arsenal as they will not be seen as big a threat as Chelsea, but it remains to be seen if Arsene Wenger will break both Arsenal’s transfer record and their wage structure to land Wayne Rooney.
There is still a long way to go before the end of the current transfer window and the Rooney transfer will be the biggest domestic transfer of the summer. What remains to be seen is who will win the race to get his signature. If Arsenal get their man this will be the intent they need to demonstrate they are no longer content to just finish in the top four year-on-year. Arsenal fans should remain patient and quietly optimistic. I really cannot tell you what I am basing my optimism on but I have a hunch that Arsenal will get their man to ensure next season’s Premiership race will be as interesting as ever.
