Arsenal may feel 'gazumped' over Higuain says Spanish football expert Graham Hunter
Arsenal fans may feel hacked off with the club’s failure to land any of the big stars that they've apparently put in bids for this summer, but with regard to Gonzalo Higuain at least, it looks like the club’s ambitions were spiked by a late hike in the asking price.
Spanish football expert Hunter explained on Talksport today how, after the player was given permission to discuss personal terms with both Arsenal and Juventus, the Spanish club then decided raise the price, just when Arsenal appeared on the cusp of closing the deal.
“Arsenal have had their noses put out of joint,” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show. And for Gunners manager Arsene Wenger, always the model of frugality, the late price increase must have been particularly galling. Although there appears to have been nothing signed between the clubs, and therefore, Real Madrid cannot be accused of anything illegal, try explaining that to the Gooners who have been craving a big signing.
Although the deal is not dead and buried, it’s certainly on the way to that. Recent reports have said that Higuain may well be a part of the Spanish club’s bid for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez – another elusive Arsenal target. Whilst it’s unlikely that the Reds will accept Madrid’s bid - if they do sell, the odds are that they’ll want a straight cash deal – if it does happen, Wenger will be in the unpleasant situation of watching two of his targets swop clubs.
