The Spanish international is rumoured to have a 40 per-cent chance of starting the match, and the smart money is on him taking a place on the bench.
Arsenal will also be without Robin van Persie (ankle), Johan Djourou (knee) and long-term absentees Kieran Gibbs and Aaron Ramsey.
Barcelona will be missing influential midfielder Andres Iniesta (thigh) and Eric Abidal (groin) for the first leg, while former Manchester United defender Gerard Pique (knee) is also doubtful.
