Arsenal told by Bolton Gary Cahill will cost £20 million

Wenger is on the look out for defensive reinforcements, particularly at centre-back, after injury to William Gallas exposed his side's deficiencies in that department in the latter stages of the season. At 23 years-old, but already with Premier League experience, Cahill falls into the category of a player that would interest Wenger, though Bolton are currently negotiating a new deal with the defender in a bid to prevent his head being turned by offers from elsewhere. Further to that aim, Megson has also placed an enormous price tag on one of his most consistent performers this season, with Arsenal unlikely to meet the £20 million asking price, according to a report in the Mirror. 'Gary is under contract and we are currently in the process of negotiating a new, improved deal for him' said Megson. 'He's the best young centre-half in the country by an absolute street and I've been delighted with him again this year. 'I want to build the team around him for the next few seasons. 'I can understand why the big clubs are interested in Gary, but it's going to take an offer over and above what we received for Nicolas Anelka from Chelsea.' Cahill moved to the Reebok Stadium from Aston Villa for £5m and has already attracted the attentions of England manager Fabio Capello.
