Arsenal to begin spending spree with young French star?

It’s the headline that could have been written at the start of every transfer window since Arsene Wenger arrived at Arsenal. With a summer beckoning that Gooners hope will be filled with a few big name captures, Wenger looks like kicking off his shopping in more restrained and traditional style.

The player in question is Lyon’s promising midfielder Clement Grenier. Rated at £8million or so, the 22 year old has stated that he is likely to leave Lyon this summer, and has been attracting attention from a number of clubs across the continent. Juventus are understood to be particularly interested and have had Grenier watched a number of times. It appears now however that Arsenal may have won the race to sign him.

Quoted recently in the Daily Mirror, the young Frenchman appears to be fairly well set on his club for next year. He said “I have more or less made a decision about which club I want to join.” He went on to reveal that “I have made the choice for sporting reasons above all. Arsenal? It could well be them. “There would be competition for places, but you get that at all big clubs and it does not stop me making my decision. I am still young, but I have always set myself targets and I do everything possible to exceed them.”

Although it may not be the kind of signing required to particularly ignite the Emirates, there’s no reason to expect that Wenger’s plans will end there. There’s plenty of conjecture about more signings on the horizon, with one particular rumour, which refuses to go away. If true it could be a sensational capture for the club. Watch this space.
