Arsenal set to challenge Spurs for French striker signature

It would be fair to say that Arsenal have been underwhelming in this transfer, a state not helped by the assertion of chief exec Gazidis that they are good enough as they are. The transfer window is a powerful opportunity to say to your rivals that you mean business, you have ambitions and are a big player. Even if a new big name player has a slow start it is important for the confidence of a squad that the club is attracting quality reinforcements.

Names such as Alexandre Lacazette, Jamie Vardy have been public failures with the Lacazette bid far too low for a player of his calibre and you would expect them to come back with a more sensible offer.

That said there is still time, the window is still open and there is still the opportunity to make a big difference which brings us to the latest name being linked with a Gunners move.

The name being revealed by French publication Canal+ (via the Mirror) is that of former French U21 player Wissam Ben Yedder. The 25-year-old striker who plays his football at Toulouse has also attracted interest from Spurs. The name has hardly gone down well with Gunners fans who wondered who he is and why they were not stronger in chasing the likes of Morata and Higuain.

Ben Yedder joined Toulouse in 2010 and has become a consistent goalscorer, netting 23 in 41 last term.

The player has also attracted the interest of West Ham and while clearly a work in progress he could certainly provide additional firepower if he can transfer that Ligue 1 form to the Premier League. Big ask though.
