Arsenal linked with fresh Hangeland move as Fulham try to hold on to star

Fulham are set to offer a new contract to Brede Hangeland, but the player's agent has admitted Arsenal are still interested in signing the defender. Arsene Wenger wanted the commanding Norway international to replace Kolo Toure but the move fell through, with the Gunners signing Belgian centre-back Thomas Vermaelen for £10m from Ajax instead. But, despite Vermaelen's impressive start to his career at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal's defensive problems are not yet totally solved, as displayed when Wenger's men conceded four goals in a defeat to Manchester City earlier this month. This could lead to a fresh move for Hangeland in January. His agent, Rune Hauge, said of the failed summer swoop: 'There was interest - but nothing concrete.' And Fulham boss Roy Hodgson told Sky Sports he believes that the centre-back would stay at Craven Cottage. He said: 'We hope he will sign a new contract. We know he's happy here.'
