Arsenal have been given the clearest indication yet that a deal to bring highly rated central midfielder William Carvalho to the Emirates could materialise after Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon have reportedly put the player up for sale.

Wenger and his team have been keeping their eye on the 22-year-old for some time now, with various scouting trips to assess the players ability. The Metro reported last week that Arsenal had put in a £24 million pound bid to bring Carvalho to London.

The offer was turned down, but Portuguese newspaper 'Record' have said that the 6-cap international is available for the right price, with Sporting looking to cash in during the summer transfer window.

After a board meeting held last week, and the need for new signings a decision was made to let the starlet go. Carvalho has a release clause of £35 million but it is now thought that Sporting would be willing to accept an offer in the region of £25 million, if they were to receive cash up front.

Arsenal's history of paying transfer fee's in a lump sum one off payment, instead of in instalments has put the London club at the front of the queue for Carvalho's signature. Although Premier League rivals Manchester United have also been heavily linked with the player in the past so they may face competition in brining the player to the Premier League.
