Arsenal favourites to sign Olivier Giroud

Arsenal are in pole position to sign French striker Olivier Giroud, according to Montpellier coach Rene Girard.

The London club have been tracking the forward for a while now and are hot favourites to secure his signature this summer. The hit-man was in unreal form last season netting 21 goals in 36 matches for league winners Montpellier.

Aston Villa, Newcastle, Liverpool, QPR and a whole bunch of European clubs have expressed an interest in the striker, but he has stalled talks on his future until he comes back from Euro 2012.

According to club manager Girard, Arsenal are very interested in Giroud and the Frenchmen wants to play in England, so if Arsene Wenger agrees a fee with the president he will sign for the Gunners.

The clubs are yet to open talks over a deal, but it is believed Arsenal will offer below Giroud's release clause of £12.8m but include Marouane Chamakh as part of the deal. Montpellier have shown an interest in Chamakh before and it is thought that a season- long loan deal could be a real possibility. "We would like Chamakh on loan, as part of the deal, but I don't know if that is possible."

Arsenal are looking to offload fringe strikers including Nicklas Bendtner, Carlos Vela and Chamakh this summer. If Giroud signs he will be a fantastic understudy to Robin Van Persie but is currently contracted until 2014.
