On the radar: Jan Vertonghen is wanted by Arsenal

Arsenal are plotting a move for Ajax's highly-rated defender Jan Vertonghen.

Manager Arsene Wenger is monitoring the Belgium international's progress in Amsterdam and the Gunners have had representatives at Martin Jol side's last three games.

The 23-year-old has partnered current Arsenal star Thomas Vermaelen in central defence for Ajax and Belgium and Wenger wants the duo to team up at the Emirates.

But the Arsenal boss will face stiff competition for Vertonghen - who can also play in midfield - with scouts from Barcelona and Juventus understood to have watched the Ajax star.

Vertonghen is under contract until 2013 but Ajax have recently been forced to sell players to balance the books.
