Arsene Wenger hailed the performance of his Arsenal side following the 4-0 victory over Wigan. The Gunners had lost their last two Premier League matches but they bounced back in midweek with a 3-2 win against Standard Liege in Europe. And they were in fine form on Saturday as they swept aside a poor Latics side to pick up three important points. "We scored many goals and didn't concede, and three days after a very physically demanding game in Liege it is good to see we could repeat a good performance," Wenger told Sky Sports. "We have shown the right attitude and quality today and I am very optimistic there is something special in this team." Wenger singled out Thomas Vermaelen for special praise after the Belgian defender scored two goals, including an excellent second. "He scored two great goals. He has a great left foot and can score these kind of goals," said the Arsenal boss. Wenger admits it was vital for Arsenal to return to winning ways after back-to-back defeats on the road against Manchester United and Manchester City. He explained: "If you don't get points you are quickly off the pace in the Premier League so this was a big game for us and it was important to get three points. "But in the first four games we played three away games and we have only played twice at home now."
