Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has denied that Arsenal came close to signing controversial midfielder Joey Barton during the summer transfer window. Barton had claimed that a deal to move the North London club had been close but the plug was pulled after a being involved in an incident with Gervinho.

Barton clashed with the Ivorian winger while playing for Newcastle on the opening day of the season, which resulted in a red card for Gervinho. Hill-Wood has since said that Arsenal had infact never been interested in signing Barton despite his claims of Arsenals interest. Barton instead signed for QPR on transfer deadline day and has been handed the captains armband by Neil Warnock.
