Arsenal begin contract talks with 'next Vieira'

The 29-year-old Abou Diaby has had his injury setbacks and the news that his nine-year term at the Emirates has drawn to a close is sad for the fact the player failed to live up to the billing. Diaby made just 124 appearances for Arsenal in midfield after consistent fitness issues which hit a peak in 2013/14 when the player made just one start and failed to appear at all for 2014/15. With the background of that record it came as no surprise that the player was not offered a new contract but was instead included in the clubs release list for the season.

The respected journalist from L’Equipe believes however that the player has not been released but is instead in the process of negotiating a new contract with the North London club.

‘#Diaby hasn't been released by #Arsenal. Out of contract. But verbal agreement with the club. Talks ongoing for a new contract.’ Tweeted Bruno Constant.

The midfielder who Wenger compared with Patrick Vieira on his arrival corrected the comparison which seemed more to do with physical attributes.

"Vieira is much more aggressive. He makes more of a physical impact in a game, in midfield. He is amazing. I don’t think I have this quality yet. I think I can develop in that way but he is much stronger."

If Diaby is to continue his stay at the Emirates and perhaps reach a testimonial year you have to wonder what the contract will look like but you do hope that the player is able to fulfil a little more of his undeniable promise.
