The highly rated 22-year-old has forced his way into the Holland reckoning after previous Ajax coach Marco van Basten successfully switched him from centre-back to full-back, impressing a host of clubs and Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk in the process.

Van der Wiel is expected to be part of Holland's World Cup squad and Dutch sources claim Arsenal have had the player watched by their scouts in recent weeks.

But the defender is not just interesting the gunners and city, with his representative claiming he is being tracked by other Premier League clubs.

No club has approached me officially to tell me they are watching Gregory since Manchester City a few months ago,' said his agent, Hakin Sliman.

'But you hear one or two other English clubs are keeping an eye on him. That wouldn't be surprising.

'Gregory is enjoying an excellent season and is playing really well.'
