Analysed: Arsenal V Bayern Munich's past meetings

It is the fourth time in the last five years that Arsenal and Bayern Munich have crossed paths in the Champions League.

Arsenal topped their group for the first time since 2012 but still managed to draw the five-time European champions, as they finished runners-up to Atletico Madrid in Group D. The Gunners have not progressed beyond the last 16 since 2010, when they defeated Porto.

The Gunners travel to Munich for the first leg of their last-16 tie against Bayern.

Here, we look back at the last six meetings.

2012-13 - last 16 - Bayern win on away goals

Arsenal looked to have been on their way out of the Champions League days after their shock FA Cup defeat to Championship side Blackburn. Arsenal were outclassed by Bayern and found themselves 2-0 down after 21 minutes to goals from Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller. Lukas Podolski pulled a goal back in the 55th minute but Mario Mandzukic restored Bayern's two-goal advantage with a precious third away goal in the 77th minute.

Bayern fought off a late scare as Arsenal put on a brave fightback before being eliminated on away goals. The Gunners got off to the perfect start as Olivier Giroud opened the scoring in the third minute. Arsenal added a second goal in the 85th minute when Laurent Koscielny headed them level on aggregate but the German side held out, and went on to win the tournament.

2013-14 - last 16 - Bayern win 3-1 on aggregate

Arsenal were left kicking themselves as Mesut Ozil missed a ninth-minute penalty before Wojciech Szczesny was sent off after 37 minutes. David Alaba missed the resulting penalty but Bayern still proved too strong with an extra man on the field. The Bundesliga giants took the lead shortly after half-time as Kroos scored a wonderful goal from the edge of the box, leaving substitute goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski helpless. Muller doubled the visitors' advantage with two minutes remaining, which left Arsenal with an extremely difficult task in the second leg.

Arsenal were unable to repeat the previous season's 2-0 victory at the Allianz Arena. Bastian Schweinsteiger destroyed their hopes when he scored the first goal of the night just after half-time. Moments later, Lukas Podolski equalised which levelled the game on the night but was not enough to spark an Arsenal fightback. Muller had a stoppage-time penalty saved, but Bayern progressed fairly comfortably to the last eight.

2015-16 - group stage

Arsenal 2 Bayern Munich 0, October 2015

Arsenal kept their knock-out stage hopes alive after defeating Bayern Munich 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium. The Londoners had lost their opening two group matches to Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiakos and went into the as game huge underdogs against Pep Guardiola's side. Giroud opened the scoring with 13 minutes remaining before Ozil confirmed the victory in stoppage time.

Two weeks later Bayern got their revenge as they thrashed the Gunners at the Allianz Arena. It made the task of qualifying from the group even tougher for Arsenal, who remained bottom of the group with two games remaining. Arsene Wenger's side found themselves 3-0 down at the break with goals coming from Robert Lewandowski, Muller and Alaba. Arjen Robben made it four 10 minutes after the break before Giroud got a consolation in the 69th minute. Muller got his second of the game with a minute remaining to compound Arsenal's misery. Arsenal went on to qualify, winning both of their final matches and defeated Olympiakos 3-0 away from home.
