Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain given first call up to England Under 21s

Alex Oxlade- Chamberlain put the disappointment of missing out on a Barclays Premier League move behind him on Wednesday with an England U21 call-up.

The Southampton striker, 17, was named in the U19 squad last week but has been promoted for Tuesday's friendly in Italy after a series of excellent displays.

Under 21s manager Stuart Pearce said: 'He is showing a lot of promise so we thought we'd bring him into the squad.'

U21 SQUAD: Goalkeepers: Fielding (Blackburn), Loach (Watford), Steele (Middlesbrough).

Defence: Bennett(Middlesbro), Gibbs (Arsenal), Kelly (Liverpool), Mee (Leicester),Richards (Man City), Smalling (Man Utd), Tomkins (West Ham), Walker(Aston Villa).

Midfield: Albrighton(Villa), Cork (Burnley), Delph (Villa), Oxlade-Chamberlain(Southampton), Henderson (Sunderland), Lansbury (Norwich), Muamba(Bolton), Rodwell (Everton), Sinclair (Swansea).

Forwards: Delfouneso (Villa), Rodriguez (Burnley), Sturridge (Bolton).
