Adebayor has brought shame on the game, blasts Premier League chief

Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been accused by the head of the Premier League of bringing shame on the English game. The FA have until 6pm on Tuesday to decide whether to charge Adebayor for stamping on the face of Arsenal’s Robin van Persie and goading fans of his old club after scoring at Eastlands on Saturday. But Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: ‘Clearly it doesn’t do any good for the brand. These incidents don’t do the image of the league, or football generally, any good.’ City manager Mark Hughes said on the club’s website that Adebayor’s assault on Van Persie was an accident, while the Togo striker has offered to give a steward, hurt in the melee that followed his goal, a signed shirt and his apologies. In a further twist, Greater Manchester Police received a complaint from a fan that Van Persie himself swore and made gestures at City fans in the wake of his goal. Manchester United, meanwhile, firmly believe Adebayor should be banned for Sunday’s derby at Old Trafford. The FA yesterday collated the evidence against Adebayor. If the striker is charged and found guilty of violent conduct for his challenge on Van Persie, he would be handed a three-match ban which, under the FA's new fast-track disciplinary system, would see him miss this weekend's Manchester derby. He could also face further sanction over his goal celebration, for which he was cautioned by referee Mark Clattenburg, who took no action over the challenge on the Dutchman.
