5 Big Premier League Deadline Day deals in the past

29 August 2014 13:48

With deadline day just around the corner and approaching quickly I thought I would take a look at some of the biggest deals which have happened on deadline days in time gone by:

Robinho To Man City:

In the summer of 2008 Man City bought Brazilian superstar Robinho from Real Madrid for £32.5M. The deal was unexpected with him being expected to move to Chelsea all summer then suddenly just before the deadline Man City went under the radar and he became the big money Abu Dhabi United groups first signing. The skillful Brazilian was not much of a success at City only playing 53 games in total for them before returning to Santos in January 2010.

Wayne Rooney To Man United:

In 2004 teenage sensation Wayne Rooney signed for Manchester United for £20M. The then 16 year old burst onto the scene with a wonder strike V Arsenal. Then two years on at 18 he signed for Man United after leaving his boyhood club Everton, it was seen as a big risk as he was so young. He made an impact straight away at United scoring a Hat Trick on his Debut in a 6-2 home Champions League win v Fenerbahce. He has gone onto be a big success becoming the clubs 3rd all time top goal scorer with 217 goals and winning 5 Premierships and 1 Champions League while at Old Trafford.

Fernando Torres To Chelsea:

In January of 2011 there was a huge deadline day with Fernando Torres moving to Chelsea from Liverpool for a British Record £50M. Torres went with big things expected of him at Stamford Bridge but it is fair to say he has far from impressed only scoring 20 Premier League goals in 110 appearances he has nowhere near repaid the fee. He could be leaving London this window with many rumors saying he will be leaving.

Andy Carroll To Liverpool:

On the same day in 2011 Andy Carroll moved to Liverpool from Newcastle for an extortionate £35M as Liverpool panicked and looked for a replacement for Torres. He was quite a risk for Liverpool and it turned out to be one they should not have taken. He was fairly unproven as he had only half a season of regular Premier League football under his belt. The Geordie only scored 11 goals in 58 appearances at Anfield before moving onto West Ham originally on loan and then the move was made permanent for £15M.

Mesut Ozil To Arsenal:

Last season’s summer deadline day will be remembered for Arsene Wenger doing what the Arsenal fans had been waiting for and spend big money on a big name when he brought in Mesut Ozil for £42.5M deal from Real Madrid. The German certainly had a big reputation to live up to as he was very highly rated at Madrid and on the International scene also. So far he has received mixed reviews putting in some great performances and some not so good, so it is yet to be seen whether the money was well spent or not.

So will there be any big deals this deadline day? How much money will be spent? Will your team get there man or have to make a dash for someone else?
