Pekerman's future not yet settled

02 Jul 2006 - 11:09:22

The Argentinian Football Association is still to decide whether to accept Jose Pekerman's resignation as national team boss.

Pekerman announced that he planned to step down following his side's penalty shootout defeat against Germany in the quarter-finals of the World Cup on Friday.

AFA president Julio Grondona was surprised by the coach's decision and is considering trying to persuade him to stay on.

"I did not hope for it," Grondona said of Pekerman's resignation.

"It is not the moment to talk about it. Nothing is finalised. I am going to think about that in Buenos Aires, when it is quieter."

He added: "No team played better than Argentina in the World Cup.

"Sometimes, we pressed Germany back. The team showed a good level of football. We just lacked luck and ability in the final metres."
