Argentina beat Jamaica 1-0 in Vina del Mar to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Copa America.

Gonzalo Higuain's early goal at the Estadio Sausalito proved enough to make sure of top spot in Group B for Gerardo Martin's team, while Jamaica's campaign ended with a third successive defeat.

The decisive moment came in the 10th minute when Angel Di Maria found the Napoli forward with an incisive pass and Higuain controlled, turned and beat goalkeeper Dwayne Miller with a low shot into the corner of the net.

Argentina had further chances before the interval, with Manchester City full-back Pablo Zabaleta and Higuain seeing shots blocked and Barcelona playmaker Lionel Messi curling a shot wide, before Di Maria went close on two occasions.

Seven minutes into the second half winger Di Maria struck the bar, then Messi brought a good save out of Miller soon after.

Although Deshorn Brown and Giles Barnes tried their luck for Jamaica, the Reggae Boyz made little impression against a side who controlled the pace of the game throughout - despite being unable to add to Higuain's goal.

Manchester United player Di Maria said afterwards: "We created several chances but we were not lucky enough in front of goal.

"However, we wanted to end at the top of the group and we have achieved that, it is important."

Juventus striker Carlos Tevez added: "We have to continue looking for our best shape ahead the quarter-finals.

"However, we have to grow, as any team which loses a game now goes home."

Argentina will return to the same venue for Friday's quarter-final, against one of the best third-placed teams to qualify.
