Edgardo Bauza has been appointed the new coach of Argentina.

The 58-year-old leaves his role as Sao Paulo boss to take over from Gerardo Martino who quit in the wake of Argentina's Copa America final defeat to Chile.

Argentina are currently third in the South American qualifying table for the 2018 World Cup, with their next match against Uruguay on September 1 - although Bauza will be without Barcelona star Lionel Messi, who retired from international football in June.

A statement on Brazilian club Sao Paulo's official website said: "Sao Paulo Football Club announces that Edgardo Bauza has received and accepted...the invitation made by the Football Association of Argentina to take charge of the national team.

"The board wishes to thank the coach and wish him luck in his new challenge."
