Title challenge over?

From the Sunday Mail:  Our 13th game since our last defeat proved unlucky - 3-2 at Dumbarton on 2nd January

PAUL SHEERIN admits Arbroath’s title challenge could be over after they were well beaten by Airdrie.

Goals from Paul Lovering and Willie McLaren sank the Smokies, who are now seven points adrift of league leaders Cowdenbeath with just six games to play.

And Red Lichties player-manager Sheerin said: “There’s no doubting that Airdrie were worthy of the three points.

“It’s a big ask for us now as seven points is a huge gap.”

Arbroath’s best chance of the game fell to Craig Wedderburn who headed over Sheerin’s cross early in the second half.

The Diamonds opened the scoring in the 74th minute with skipper Lovering heading home his eighth goal of the season from a McLaren corner.

Airdrie could have made it 2-0 but Ryan Donnelly’s flashing header was well held by Darren Hill.

But the points were wrapped up in injury time when McLaren lobbed keeper Hill from outside the box.

Diamonds gaffer Jimmy Boyle said: “We’re pleased to make it three wins and three clean sheets in a row.”
