Arbroath sign full-back Shaun Rutherford

Arbroath have signed Queen of the South full-back Shaun Rutherford on loan ahead of kick-off against table-topping visitors Elgin.

A knee injury keeps Craig Johnstone out and Sergio Alvarez is not yet ready to return after a hamstring problem but Martin Grehan returns after a hip knock.

Plans to include former Hamilton striker Andy Ryan, who has played three times as a trialist recently, are on ice as the 21-year-old wants to explore options in full-time football.

Manager Todd Lumsden said: "Elgin have a really good strike force but if we can keep them quiet, we have players that can cause them problems."

Elgin defender Jamie Duff is available after a groin injury but the Borough Briggs skipper may have to be content with a place on the bench.

Duff's return gives manager Jim Weir a full squad to choose from and the Elgin chief said: "We have the chance to extend our lead as the four sides immediately below us are not playing in the league.

"We started a big month with a win over East Fife and it would be terrific to build on that with a win at Arbroath. We will need to tread carefully as Bobby Linn is a terrific goal-grabber for them and he will need careful watching."
