Dowie strike enough for Doonhamers

An early goal from Andy Dowie proved enough to give Queen of the South a valuable away victory against Alloa, who missed the chance to ease their relegation fears.

Doonhamers defender Dowie put Queens into a 17th-minute lead, heading home Chris Mitchell's cross for his second of the season.

Ryan McCord could have drawn Barry Smith's side level before the break as his shot from the left of the box was parried by Alex Clark in the Queen's goal.

Iain Russell could have doubled the visitors' lead 10 minutes from time but his effort went wide of the target and he was soon denied again as his header was saved by Alloa goalkeeper Scott Bain.

Alloa failed in their search for an equaliser as they could not muster any clear-cut chances with just two efforts on target.
