Jason Cummings earns Hibs win at Alloa

Jason Cummings struck his 14th goal of the season to secure Hibernian a 1-0 win at bottom club Alloa and cut the gap on Scottish Championship leaders Rangers.

Cummings fired the only goal on the hour-mark but the visitors spurned plenty of other chances while Alloa, for whom defender Dougie Hill was sent off, remain without a home win this season.

Hibernian defender Darren McGregor headed wide in the 13th minute and Alloa had their best chance of the first half five minutes later when former Cardiff and Sunderland striker Michael Chopra's shot flew the wrong side of the post.

Visiting striker Dominique Malonga spurned an opportunity as he pulled his close-range effort wide and midfielder John McGinn's shot forced Alloa goalkeeper Andy McNeil to parry.

Liam Fontaine forced a fine save from Alloa's substitute goalkeeper David Crawford and Hibs took a deserved 60th-minute lead soon after when Cummings drilled home a low shot from inside the area.

Hibs threatened again through David Gray's header and Cummings' header was then fumbled by Crawford before Hill was sent off in the 79th minute for his second bookable offence.

The 10 men almost conceded a second before the end when Hibs midfielder Fraser Fyvie crashed his shot over the crossbar.
