Frenchman Rolland Courbis is set to sign as coach of Algerian first division club USM Alger and will take over from Argentine Miguel Angel Gamondi who resigned last week, the Algerian news agency APS reported on Sunday.

The 59-year-old former defender has had a colourful career spanning 41 years as both a player and coach and most notably had spells at Marseille, Bordeaux, Ajaccio, Montpellier and recently the Niger national team.

Gamondi resigned after last Tuesday's 1-0 defeat against ES Setif which leaves them in 11th position in the Algerian top flight.

Courbis was once shot during the murder of his friend and colleague Dominique Rutily in 1996 in what was a gang related incident and also served prison time for illegal transfers during his time at Marseille.

He is set to finalise the deal on Monday and take charge for his first match the following day against league leaders USM El Harrach.
