Howe flies high for Gulls

Rene Howe scored the only goal of the game as Torquay moved to within one point of the automatic npower League Two promotion places with a 1-0 win over Aldershot.

Target man Howe finished off a sweeping seventh-minute move to fire the Gulls ahead from close range.

Debutant Ryan Jarvis, on loan from Walsall, set the move in motion with a great ball out to playmaker Eunan O'Kane on the left and his first time ball across the box was clinically converted by Howe.

The goal took Howe's tally to 10 for the season, after the striker had a fourth-minute effort ruled out.

Josh Payne's 22nd-minute free-kick forced a smart save from home goalkeeper Robert Olejnik at the foot of his left post while the Gulls number one was quick off his line to head away from Shots striker Guy Madjo in the 28th minute.

Shots stopper Jamie Young made an arching 55th-minute save to keep out Kevin Nicholson's goalbound free-kick, while the left-back's next set-piece - also heading for the target - was deflected wide by Aaron Morris' head.

Shots substitute Michael Doughty - on loan from QPR - marked his introduction with a 70th-minute first time volley that flew just over, while at the other end, Howe responded by sending a 73rd-minute volley on the spin just wide.
