Gillingham 2-1 Aldershot: Report

29 January 2011 17:14
McDonald at the double On-loan Norwich striker Cody McDonald made it six goals in five games by striking twice as Gillingham beat Aldershot 2-1. The 24-year-old joined on a season-long loan in the summer as part of the deal that took Simeon Jackson in the other direction on a permanent deal. But the Gills faithful have hardly missed their former hero thanks to McDonald and the ex-Dartford man struck twice in the second-half to keep his side in the play-off places. Aldershot should have taken the lead in the first minute when Josh Gowling was dispossessed in midfield and Alan Julian was forced to save smartly from Peter Vincenti. The Gills began to take control soon after and Luke Rooney shot wide after McDonald and Adebayo Akinfenwa combined before McDonald flashed an effort wide after the break. But the Shots' resistance was broken in the 53rd minute when McDonald poked home Curtis Weston's cross. McDonald grabbed his 14th goal of the season with a minute left when he buried Barry Fuller's cross into the roof of the net. Debutant Alex Rodman managed to pull one back in stoppage time with a 25-yard strike but Dean Holdsworth tasted his first defeat as boss.
