Dover 2-0 Aldershot: Report

27 November 2010 21:31
Birchall double stuns Shots Adam Birchall was once again Dover's FA Cup hero as his 10th and 11th goals in the competition secured a surprise 2-0 win over Aldershot to put the Whites into the third round for the first time in their history. The 25-year-old striker, who grabbed the opener in the 2-0 win over Gillingham in the first round, was at it again as he opened the scoring then grabbed a late penalty for the victory. And it could have been better for the striker as he missed the best chance in the first half - turning Aldershot defender Darren Jones only to scuff wide on 21 minutes. The Whites thought they had taken the lead after nine minutes but Olly Schulz's header from Harry Baker's free-kick was ruled offside. Wade Small had the visitors' best chances in the opening 45 minutes - the best one in the opening 60 seconds - and the veteran striker should have done better. He was made to pay 10 minutes after the restart when Birchall picked the ball up outside the area and coolly found the bottom corner of Jamie Young's net. And he made sure Dover's name was in the hat for the third round when he slotted a penalty following Danny Hylton's handball to send the Crabble Ground faithful delirious.
