Dodds double denies Shots

Louis Dodds' brace was just enough for Port Vale to put a big dent in Aldershot's lingering play-off ambitions as they clinched a 2-1 triumph at the EBB Stadium.

On the back of four defeats in their last five, Vale never looked in trouble against the Shots and Dodds' double strike takes his tally for the season to eight.

After a cagey opening the game sprung to life after 12 minutes when Dodds took the ball down beautifully with his left foot and hit a fizzing low effort with his right past Jamie Young.

Guy Madjo, starved of the ball early on, had Shots' best chance of the half on the half-hour mark when he headed wide after Ben Herd had supplied a brilliant delivery.

Vale doubled their lead after 74 minutes when Tom Pope slid in Dodds, who, with the calmest of finishes, stroked the ball into the corner from eight yards out.

Shots substitutes Peter Vincenti and Wilko Risser then combined as the latter's left-footed shot deflected past Stuart Tomlinson four minutes from time, but Vale held on.
