New Brazilian signing Fred was first to open the score with a 30th-minute effort, and everybody were quick to assume the defending champions were going to stroll through the rest of their encounter against Ajaccio.But the Corsican levelled the score line only a handful of minutes later, Kaba Diawara making the best of an awarded penalty kick. Lyon star playmaker Juninho allowed his side to regain the lead thanks to a powerful drive in the 50th minute, but yet again, both teams were back on level terms, former Chelsea midfielder Tiago heading an unfortunate own goal, following a Chafni free kick in the 54th minute.
