New Brazilian signing Fred was first to open the score with a 30th-minute effort, and everybody were quick to assume the defending champions were going to stroll through the rest of their encounter against Ajaccio.
But the Corsican levelled the score line only a handful of minutes later, Kaba Diawara making the best of an awarded penalty kick. Lyon star playmaker Juninho allowed his side to regain the lead thanks to a powerful drive in the 50th minute, but yet again, both teams were back on level terms, former Chelsea midfielder Tiago heading an unfortunate own goal, following a Chafni free kick in the 54th minute.
It all looked like both sides were going to share the points, but France international Sylvain Wiltord ended his prolific week with a last effort, his 69th-minute goal handing Gerard Houllier’s side all three points on the night.
